ACU (Army Combat Uniform) is the U.S.Army's current uniform. The camouflage pattern used in the uniform is known as UCP (Universal Camouflage Pattern). UCP is designed to work in all environments however due to the colours used it works best in urban and desert environments. Because of this the uniform has often been nicknamed ICU as it makes the user rather visible in British woodland.
A common mistake is that ACU is simply the camouflage pattern, in reality ACU is the entire uniform which has a different style of cut to the older BDU. This new cut was designed taking in feedback from soldiers and includes: Pockets in the elbows and knees that accept inserts to function as knee and elbow pads, integrated IFF (Identify Friend or Foe) tags on the shoulders to reduce fracticide, velcro on the chest and arms for the attachment of names, ranks and unit patches. As well as these major changes there is also a plethora of other pockets on the uniform. Also for the ACU is a new shade of green that matches with the uniform. It is known as foliage green and is of a considerably lighter shade than the traditional olive drab. The colour black has been entirely eliminated from the uniform with exception to the beret.
