Barrel Cutting
From Airsoft Community Wiki
Many people cut down longer barrels to fit into smaller weapons. It is a popular practice that saves buying a whole new set of barrels each time a new weapon is purchased. However, unless done properly it can render a perfectly decent barrel useless. A general guide is set out below, but anyone attempting to cut a barrel does so at their own risk.
[edit]
Tools Needed
- Decent junior hacksaw, with fine (> 30 TPI) blade, preferably hardened steel
- A bench vice or similar apparatus to hold the barrel, padded if possible
- Large (~ 1/2") drill bit
- Small (~ 1/16 - 1/8") round modellers file
- Medium (~ 1/2") flat file
- Barrel Cleaner and relevant oiled cloth
[edit]
Procedure
- Measure and mark the barrel to where it needs to be cut.
- Measure a second and third time, ensure you are not cutting the wrong end of the barrel.
- Mount the barrel in the vice (use some cloth round it if it's not padded to avoid scratching), with the point of cutting just exposed so as to minimize bending.
- Carefully cut off the excess with the hacksaw.
- Use the flat file to ensure you have a perfectly square end, and remove the outer rough edge.
- Use the file on the inside of the newly cut end to remove the inner rough edge.
- By hand, use the large drill bit to de-burr the inside of the barrel, making it super smooth.
- Clean the barrel by pushing the cloth through with the cleaning rod from the hop end to the new muzzle end.
