Designated Marksman

The Designated Marksman (DM) is a military role which forms an integral part of a U.S. infantry squad as opposed to a sniper who generally works as a seperate unit. The designated marksman's role is to supply more accurate fire than normal assault rifles are capable of on targets at ranges up to around 500m, less than those of a true sniper rifle is capable of reaching.

Designated Marksmen are generally issued with an accurised semiautomatic or select fire rifle based upon a standard assault or battle rifle rather than a true sniper rifle. Examples of such rifles are the US Army's M16A4 based Squad Designated Marksman Rifle (SDM-R), the USMC's M14 based Designated Marksman Rifle (DMR) and M16A4 based Squad Advanced Marksman Rifle (SAM-R) and The US Navy's Mk 12 Mod 0/Mod 1 (the Mark 12 Mod 0 is also used by the US Army and is also known under the designation SPR).
