North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

Formed during the Cold War, NATO (as it is an acronym, it should be in caps) was created to act as a unified deterrant against communist invasion.

In these days of comparative nicety between the two power blocks, east and west, NATO serves as a western alliance, thus creating a stability and comfort for all nations under its umbrella, as they can all rely upon support from one another.
