PARA

Often used as an abbreviation of "Paratrooper" in a weapon's type, or version description. A "PARA version" is commonly related, or based upon, a long-barreled gun or one of which has a long overall length. Versions of weapons including the word "para" will usually be fitted with a sliding or folding stock (rather than a fixed, solid stock) to shorten the overall length. These can be supplied to soldiers working in confined spaces such as aircraft, and ground vehicles/tanks, who need to maintain the accuracy and range of a longer-length weapon without relying on smaller, less-practical weapons.
